Setting up your design in Canva

Designing your stationery in Canva? Follow these simple steps to set up a print ready file, so your design prints exactly how you imagined it.

Step 1: Create Your Design at the Right Size

  • Click Create a design, then Custom size
  • Designing a die-cut shape like an arch? Follow my die-cut shape guidelines and use the template I provide
  • Change the unit to mm first, then enter your width and height
  • Make sure you choose mm before typing in your size. If you enter the size first and then switch from pixels, Canva will keep it in pixels

Step 2: Turn On Bleed and Guides

If your design has colour or images that run to the edge:

  • Go to File > View settings
  • Turn on Show print bleed. A 3mm darker area appears around your page
  • Extend any images, illustrations or text that run to the edge out into the bleed area. Solid background colours extend automatically
  • Turn on Show rulers and guides to help line everything up

Step 3: Set Your Colours

  • For black text, use #000000
  • For anything you'd like printed in white ink, use #000000 as well. If you're combining white ink with colour, use magenta #ff00ff for the white parts instead
  • For anything you'd like printed in gold, use red #ff0000
  • For anything you'd like printed in silver, use cyan #00ffff. Gold and silver can't be combined in the same design
  • Keep in mind that colours look different on screen than on paper, as screens use RGB and printers use CMYK
  • For combining white, gold or silver with colour, see the ink sections in my print guidelines

Step 4: Download Your PDF

  • Click Share > Download
  • Choose PDF Print as the file type
  • Tick Crop marks and bleed
  • If you have Canva Pro, choose CMYK as the colour profile. On free Canva, RGB is fine
  • Please don't tick Flatten PDF
  • Printing guest names? Make one page per guest before downloading (see my guest name printing guidelines)

Using Your Own Fonts

Want to use a font that isn't in Canva? You'll need Canva Pro to upload your own fonts.

  • From your Canva homepage, go to Brand, then Brand Kit
  • Under Brand fonts, click Upload a font
  • Choose your font file and wait for it to upload. It will then appear in your font list
  • Please make sure you have the right licence to use the font

Not sure if your file is set up correctly? Send it through with your quote request and I'll check it for you. For general file setup, see my print guidelines.
